Label Inspection
A Midwestern contract packager of custom flavors needed a restructuring of their label inspection before their case packing process. Label checking was being done manually by employees, creating inefficiencies, inaccurate results and customer complaints and returns. Sharpe was tasked with finding a flexible solution tailored to the client’s needs.
Problem
High variance in label types, required speeds, and limited space to fit an automated system.
Contract packaging presents a challenge, many “co-packers” have a broad range of products, and processes, that must be present to be awarded contracts. Our client presented us with the following challenges in their existing process.
- Missing/Incorrect or wrinkled labels
- Label orientation, correctness, and legibility
- Round jars
- Quick changeovers to maximize line up-time with short runs of 100’s of different labels at speeds upwards of 100 packs per minute
- Limited space for an automated solution
Solution
A fully engineered automated solution, designed to accommodate a vast array of label types and deficiencies.
Sharpe provided the following equipment for a new label inspection line.
- 8 cameras functioning in-line
- Image stitching
- Pneumatic reject spur
- Timing screw infeed
- AI-powered auto learner
- Large touch screen monitor
Results
A streamlined and fully independent system, allowing for a reallocation of employees to more valuable tasks and accurate fulfillments of contract requirements.
Utilizing Sharpe’s engineered, procured, and installed solution, which fits in the same footprint as a dining room table, our client now achieves a 100% check rate on all labels sent through. Changeover from label to label, or package to package, takes only one minute. Once a few jars are sent through the system, and threshold parameters for rejects (label skew, wrinkle, or smudge) are set, no more physical action from an employee is required. The AI powered inspection is able to detect all defects not visible to the naked eye, with the auto learning feature monitoring package trends and adjusting as needed.
